News on the Street is...

EDIT: This is in fact a fake line up. The official line up does include some of the said acts.

Another year with another round of Festivals to indulge in (minus Ireland's Oxegen).  But what is this?  Do my eyes deceive me? Reading and Leeds line up out before official announcement?!  Sink your teeth into this.

Looks quite possibly the best line up I have ever seen.  Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, The Black Keys, Bad Brains, Dinosaur Jr, The Kooks, Placebo, Bloc Party... The list really does go on.  This image went viral throughout Facebook, hence why I have it.  Looks to me it came out of a magazine...  Too good to be true?  I hope so, then I wouldn't feel so bad about not going.  We'll just have to wait until official announcements on the 12th of March.

Arctic Monkeys Release New Single 'R U Mine?' - Listen

Not gonna lie, I am one of those people who usually prefers a band/artist before they hit it big, and Arctic Monkeys are high on that list.

I've always loved their earlier stuff such as Who The Fuck Are The Arctic Monkeys? Whatever People Say I am That's What I'm Not and Favourite Worst Nightmare.  I did grow to eventually like Humbug, accepting the fact that this is Arctic Monkeys when they're in the studio with Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme.  But Suck it and See?  I can't quite sum it up.

February 27th was the official release of their latest single; "R U Mine?".  Can't deny I like the song, can't admit I like the band any more.  I don't like their attitude if I'm perfectly honest.  Music suffices.   What do you think?  Have Arctic Monkeys gotten big headed?  Do you like their newer releases?

Friends, But Not As You Know Them.

I've been doing a lot of research for the 'next big thing' to write about; I've found about 20 next big things. Google, soundcloud, bandcamp - extensive research. Why have I been doing this? For your benefit! (Am I nice or what?). Meet Friends. An indie-pop/post-punk band from Brooklyn. They could be easily passed off as hipsters to the uneducated, but they are actually rather cool. They've only been together about a year which is quite a surprise considering the chemistry they have. They're pretty big for an unknown band, so my guess is they'll be big late 2012, early 2013.

They have one single that is pretty big already. "I'm His Girl" is quite the catchy song. Most people think I'm ignorant to any music that isn't rock, and well, they (maybe even you) couldn't be more wrong. I'm pretty open to listen to any type of music - even pop. Hey, if it's good there's no fighting it! And this is exactly what Friends are, and more. I quickly grew addicted to this song. Once I heard it I though "if pop music would be more like this the world would be a better place." Their singer, Samantha Urbani, has quite the voice, showing great potential and a promising future. It's soft, but rich and luxurious at the same time. I'm sorry I had to do a blog post on Friends and share their amazing-ness with you, because you will not be able to get them out of your head! Take a listen of "I'm His Girl" and let me know what you think!

Sonisphere Line Up Announced

EDIT: Sonisphere has been cancelled. But go ahead, cry at the beauty of the line up.

Sonisphere were first on the list of Festivals to announce most of their line up.  And WOW.  Sonisphere is at it's 4th year and is a touring music festival generally hosting Hard Rock, Metal and Punk Rock acts.

Pretty jealous I'm not going to a festival myself this Summer (hey, I'm Irish, we're all unemployed and broke!) but here is Sonisphere England's Line Up:

But what really blew me out of the park was Sonisphere Spain's Line Up

Sun holiday and quality music?  I'm devastated, and envious of any lucky bastard going.  I'd kill to see Soundgarden.  Try me.

Sonisphere 2012 will be touring the following places:
UK
POLAND
SPAIN
FINLAND
SWITZERLAND
FRANCE

Sonisphere England tickets are on sale now.  Weekend tickets start at £180.00 while a day ticket starts at £82.00.  You can buy your ticket to Sonisphere England here.

Dave Grohl Produces Documentary 'Sound City' - Watch Trailer

Dave Grohl is the man.  Foo Fighters recently wiped the floor out at the Grammy's, collecting 5 out of their nominated 6 awards with their album Wasting Light.  Needless to say, Grohl is a God (awarded "God-like Genius" at the NME Awards).  He was drummer for Scream, Nirvana, Them Crooked Vultures, Queens of the Stone Age (Songs for the Deaf); has worked with artists such as Trent Reznor; lead singer of Foo Fighters, and on top of all that, he is a doting husband and father of two girls!  Did you know he was the devil in the Tenacious D movie 'The Pick of Destiny'?  Does he ever stop?

No.  He really doesn't.

The Foo Fighters front man has announced recently that he has made a documentary about Sound City Studios, located in Los Angeles, California.  The documentary is about the history of the famous studios, where artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Guns N' Roses, Judas Priest, Nirvana and Tom Petty have all recorded classic albums.   Here's a little teaser for you to sink your teeth in!

Sound City Studios closed in 2011, and is now used privately by owners.  This documentary is to celebrate the life and memories that the artists have shared and experienced over its 42 year running.  Some of the most iconic rock albums were produced at Sound City Studios, so it's closing is like the death of a genre.  But Rock sure as hell ain't dead yet!

Not only has Dave Grohl made this documentary, there is rumours of collaborations with some of the artists featured in the said movie.  New album coming up our way?  We'll just have to wait and see!
No such announcements as to when this documentary will be released, but my guess is the Summer-time.  I cannot wait!

Red Hot Chili Peppers Announce Dublin Support Acts

Red Hot Chili Peppers News.

1) My ticket has just been dispatched after paying €130 for one ticket (almost double the asking price!) to see RHCP live in Croke Park.  Smiles all round!

2) It was announced today that The Vaccines were added to the line-up, joining Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds.

Excited? Hell yeah!
Not the best line-up for the Chili's, but it is still some line-up!  RHCP rocked it out in Slane Castle in 2003, but not with newcomer Josh Klinghoffer, but with missed guitarist John Frusciante.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers will be playing Croke Park on the 26th of June, 2012.

All My Words Are Grey: Happy Birthday Kurt Cobain

                                                                                                                        Boddah 20/2

Today’s post is special because today is Kurt Cobain’s 45th birthday.

Born on the 20th February 1967, Kurt Donald Cobain was born in the small town of Aberdeen in Seattle.  At the age of eight, Kurt experienced a milestone in his life, his parents’ divorce.  Kurt repeatedly noted in interviews (About a Son) how this had a profound affect on his childhood and choices in life.  Kurt juggled living with both parents, eventually feeling “last on the list of importance” and resented his parents for this.  His love for music and desire to start a band was seen as irrelevant to his parents; resulting in him becoming homeless – attempting to move between friends houses.

This period in Kurt’s life never took him down as he still dreamed of starting his own band, eventually making a Fecal Matter tape with some friends.  Attempting to persuade bassist, Krist Novoselic to join the band was no easy matter for Kurt, until Krist listened to the demo, and took Kurt up on his offer.

Nirvana was created involving Kurt (lead vocals, lead guitar), Krist (bass) and Aaron Burkhard/Chad Channing (drums). With demo’s made and send to every label imaginable, Nirvana got signed to Sub Pop Records.  Their time at Sub Pop led to the creation of Nirvana’s debut album, “Bleach”. Unhappy in the band, Chad left, feeling frustrated at not having an input in the song writing.

On occasion, Kurt has recalled Bleach being the result of being under-pressure by the owners of Sub Pop, being the reason they left the label. This wasn’t the end for Nirvana as the search for a label still continued.  All was not lost when a young drummer came into the scene.  Dave Grohl was a drummer for Scream at the time and when Scream suddenly broke up, Buzz Osborne of The Melvins introduced the drummer to Kurt and Krist.  A newly formed three piece, Nirvana still search for the right label.  Kurt Dreamed of being signed to Capitol because all of his favourite bands were on there.  Meeting the executives one after another, Nirvana not only refuses to get signed to Capitol, but get signed to Geffen Records (DGC).

Signed to Geffen (DGC), Nirvana went on to create “Nevermind”, one of the most influential albums of all time, adding popularity to the Grunge music originating from Seattle.  After “Nevermind” came “Incesticide” and “In Utero”, both huge classics of Grunge music.  When “Nevermind” came out, Nirvana hit huge fame beyond their wildest dreams, and beyond Kurt’s wildest nightmares.  Kurt has said that the times in the band were much better and happier right before “Nevermind” came out. Nirvana headlined Reading Festival, one of the most famous Reading Festival performances, and also MTV Unplugged, also one of the biggest MTV Unplugged performances to date. Within all this fame, Kurt married Hole singer Courtney Love, and together they had Frances Bean Cobain.  This unhappiness and uneasiness of being in the spotlight, with fear of the safety of wife and child, led to the deterioration of the beautiful soul and ultimately the death of Kurt Cobain.

Frances Bean Cobain: 2012
18 years on, Nirvana’s legacy still lives on.  Krist now lives a quiet, private life, although played bass for band Flipper for a number of years until 2009.  Dave is now frontman of the Foo Fighters, drummer for Them Crooked Vultures and “the nicest man in rock”.  Dave and Krist continue to be close friends.  Frances Bean keeps and extremely private life.  Now 19, she is currently engaged to singer Isiah Silva and does not communicate with mother, Courtney. This is what Frances Bean looks like now.

I sit here writing this with tears coming to my eyes with sorrow for Kurt and pride in Nirvana whilst wearing my Nirvana t-shirt.  My love for Nirvana as a band, and Kurt, Krist and Dave as people, is undefinable.  Their music has changed my life for the better.  I can’t thank them enough.  They’ve helped me be comfortable with who I am, helping me embrace my love for rock music; despite being picked on for liking it.  Kurt’s experience with divorce and his ability to be open with it helped me realise I’m not alone.  The music Nirvana made takes me to another world, away from the shit of every day life.  Thank you, all three of you.  Because of you, I have reached Nirvana.

Happy birthday Kurt.  We still love you and the music you made with Nirvana.  Rest in Peace.
Sit and drink pennyroyal tea. Distil the life that’s inside of me.

Foo Fighters Win Big At The Grammys

Who said rock'n'roll is dead?  Foo Fighters are proving you wrong!  Picking up 5 out of the 6 Grammy's they were nominated for, the Foo's wiped the board clean!

I was almost reduced the tears when I read the news on twitter.  The boys won Best Rock Performance ("Walk"), Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance ("White Limo"), Best Rock Song ("Walk") , Best Rock Album ("Wasting Light") and Best Long Form Music Video ("Back and Forth"). Their 6th nomination was Album of the Year and respectively lost to Adele with her smash hit album "21"

Foo Fighters went on to perform "Rope" with Deadmau5 who made the bonus track of "Wasting Light" (very jealous..).

I felt so proud of Foo Fighters and their big win, and so did they.  They couldn't believe it when fans did not know what analog tape was when they had announced that will be the medium they will be recording "Wasting Light" on.  For those of you who don't know, analog tape is what was used to record music before digital media and editing software hit the scene.  Once you record on analog tape, there is no editing, no re-doing.  That's it.  One shot.  And that's what the Foo's did.

You wouldn't think that they didn't edit the album, because the thing is flawless!  It is pure soulful rock in its prime!  Not only were Foo Fighters shocked by fans lack of knowledge on analog tape, they were shocked by the belief the fans had in them.  Accepting their award for Best Rock Performance, Dave Grohl says:
"To me, this award means a lot, because it shows the human element of music is what's important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that's the most important thing for people to do . . . It's not about being perfect, it's not about sounding absolutely correct, it's not about what goes on in a computer. It's about what goes on in here [your heart] and what goes on in here [your head]."

Those words have hit Dave to Internet fame being the second most searched under his name in Google.

More news on Dave Grohl and Foo Fighters coming soon!

The Black Keys New Single 'Lonely Boy' - Listen

I'm pretty proud to be a Black Keys fan.  But I just shamed myself today.  To do this blog post, I did some research, as per.  I have just discovered that The Black Keys have had seven albums.  Seven albums over eleven years.  I guess my music information highway just isn't large enough yet.

But I do know something about The Black Keys - they rock!  They have good consistency when it comes to albums, with their last three being outrageous delivering classic rock with garage rock and psychedelic influences.  To be perfectly honest, the general rule is if it has any psychedelic sound, it's usually top quality.  El Camino is The Black Keys 7th studio album and was released on the 6th December 2011.  The Black Keys were not famous over here in Ireland, which is a shame after 6 lost albums, but now, they are to be heard and seen everywhere. You can't go too far, switch through too many radio stations without hearing about the duo.  Their first single off  El Camino"Lonely Boy" exudes soul and classic rock'n'roll.  It is fair to say I have the repeat button stuck on this track.  It's got a great pop melody but is a banger of a rock track.  Is rock music going back to simple elements with basic chords a la grunge?

I have yet to dive into this album, but I honestly cannot wait!  These guys are phenomenal, and are currently the biggest band to hit the rock scene.  They, too, have noticed the plunge in rock music post-90's era and drummer, Patrick Carney, has blamed Nickelback for this decline (can't disagree with him really).  He has also went on to say:
"Rock and roll is the music I feel the most passionately about, and I don't like to see it fucking ruined and spoon-fed down our throats in this watered-down, post-grunge crap, horrendous shit."

Who knows, maybe the 2010-2020 decade will have a comeback in rock?  We seem to have a good year lined up with albums from artists such as Paul McCartney, Jack White, Biffy Clyro and maybe a possible Dave Grohl compilation?  But that's another days blog...

1,000 views may not seem so much, but it means the world to me!  Thank you so much to everyone and anyone who has bothered to read my posts or even bothered to look at my blog!

There is plenty more to come.  I already have a ton of drafts ready to be posted over the next few weeks!  I love doing this and I'd like to think that at least one person appreciates it.  And besides, this is my dream, so its nice to have this kind of support.  Its comforting to think that I might have some future in Journalism...

Between now and June you'll be seeing the odd tumble-weed rolling around in my blog because of exams, but I plan on doing everything ahead of time to keep shit consistent :) But after June, you won't be able to get rid of me!

What have I lined up?  News from the likes of Placebo, Dave Grohl, new artists, covers, Krist Novoselic, The Beatles, Mudhoney and more.

Thanks again guys!
