5 Unsigned Bands That I'm Loving

I'm no good at reviews, and I despise having to do them.  I only do reviews for the websites I write for; you know, starting from the bottom of the litter and what not.   But I have been sent many artists to review for my blog, and instead of reviewing their material thoroughly, I'm going to introduce you to who I'm loving right now.  Short and sweet: just how everyone likes it.

Factions
Katrin the Thrill - An alternative rock band from Greece, with the lead singer Katrin showing similarities to PJ Harvey and Alison Mosshart's style.  Great rock music, and I am loving their latest album Evil Eye Charm which will be released in the coming months.  They take on the likes of Harvey and Courtney love and create a beautiful mash of grunge with a dash of current electronica like the Smashing Pumpkins.  Take a look at their site, it's so freaking cool!

The Call Back Academy - A pop punk band from England, who have released their debut album Smarter Than Your Average Bear.  The band perfectly fit into the scene of today, where pop punk and alternative are huge elements in today's music.

Factions - I'm really loving this band.  The indie/alternative rock five-piece with Lucy Jane on vocals really do mirror PJ Harvey, but through a rebirth period.  Big hopes for the Irish natives.  Their EP Looms is available here now.

In Cages - Mix Foo Fighters, Puddle of Mudd and Nickelback and you've got In Cages.  Great classic rock/garage rock band who are quite on the edge.  They could be big because they sound good, or they could flop because they sound like they copy the greats.  It's hard to determine their future, but the sure as hell do sound great!

Half Shot - I already reviewed these guys on Music Review Unsigned, but I can't get enough of them!  The Irish-born four-piece sound just like Queens of the Stone Age: but do hold their own.  They sound absolutely out of this world, and have a chance to keep rock alive!

Concert Review: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Croke Park Dublin

As said by bassist Flea at the end of the concert, they’ve been coming here for three decades now and have always been met with a warm, generous reception.  I don’t think that Irelands current economic turn down had any effect on the welcome we all had for the Red Hot Chili Peppers this June.  With giant red chilli peppers floating about, it added a little irony to the weather of that Dublin evening: Red hot.

Although the 80,000+ stadium was empty in places, the atmosphere reflected something of a sold out Wembley show.  The Vaccines played before my arrival, which was incredibly odd due to the fact not many had arrived either.  But Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds set the mood for the rest of the evening, creating a summer-feeling ambience in the 20 degree heat-wave.  Before playing Oasis classic ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger,’ Noel announced his future return to Dublin with Kasabian in Marlay Park in the coming month of August.  The band played five Oasis tracks including ‘Little by Little’ and ‘Half the World Away’ which everyone in the audience belted out the lyrics.

Red Hot Chili Peppers arrive with Chad Smith looking like he’s about to play a game of basketball, Flea looking like he’s a biker, Anthony Kiedis with his usual ‘OFF!’ hat and Josh Klinghoffer like regular old Josh.  Each member so completely diverse yet come together as a solid family unit. That family unit was exchanged between fans and band members, making the concert feel as intimate if it were a 100 person venue.

It was their second appearance in Dublin on their I’m With You Tour, and with newcomer Josh.  By nature, Josh is an extremely shy person, and had displayed his introvert ways in interviews. But on stage; well, he surprised us all.  He was more explosive on stage than any of the other members, and than ex-member John Frusciante.  In simpler terms, he went crazy.  For the first time, people were not wanting Frusciante back in the band: Klinghoffer owned the stage.  Unfortunately, his guitar wasn’t loud enough for ‘Californication,’ and we all had to witness a failed attempt of copying Flea and Frusciante’s jam before the song in Slane Castle.  But, you could really see that he really does belong in the band, showing that he really is a true performer.

Flea on the other hand, did not disappoint at any stage during the concert.   Before ‘Around the World,’ Flea played a solo on his bass, and at one stage, sent a rippling effect through the stadium with one strum.  Flea was in fact the most warming person out of the four, by talking to the spectators regularly and telling us about his favourite ever performance in Belfast 1991.  He described his love for Ireland, and the warm reception the band always received.  This personal touch from Flea made Anthony seem a little cold.  Kiedis did not stop to talk to the crowd at any point during the concert, disappointing many fans as he is the frontman.
The three classics of ‘Under the Bridge,’ ‘Californication’ and ‘By the Way’ at the end pumped up the audience making them beg for more.  They didn’t have to wait too long before the appearance of drummer Chad Smith where he played a solo along to the crowds chants and U2’s ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday.’  This is where Flea reappears walking on stage on his hands, and proceeded to stay upside down for a further three minutes.  The four all collide together again to play ‘Suck My Kiss’ and ‘Give it Away’ before another jam and Flea saying his thank you and goodbye.  The final two tracks are what really kicked the audience into gear, with a fantastic light show during both performances.

The production of the entire show was phenomenal, with lights and screens making it an enjoyable and memorable experience.   The whole performance was recorded on audio and will be available on the Red Hot Chili Peppers website to download along with other performances of the tour.   The entire concert was electrifying, and you could understand why they were inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. For me, the concert is something I will never forget or replace.  Leaving with tears streaming from my face, I didn’t want it to end.  I’ve been listening to these boys since I was the tender age of six, and they’ve become heroes to me, so getting to experience them in all their glory was far too overwhelming.  Rumours swell around Ireland that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are due to return in a few weeks.  If said rumours are true, you will see me there.

Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan Opens Up on Howard Stern

After the release of hugely successful Oceania, Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins talks with Howard Stern for a 90 minute session in the promotion of his latest release.

Stern dives into Billy's past, discussing his rough childhood with experiencing child abuse, then into the success of the Smashing Pumpkins in the '90s, to the destruction of every band line-up.  Corgan is the only original Pumpkins band member, raising conflict on why he still utilises his name.

Corgan's love life also comes into context, with him discussing his turbulent love life he has had over the years, and politley refuses to talk about his recent break up with The Veronica's singer, Jessica Origliasso.  Corgan discusses his feud with Courtney Love, and describes her as "the least loyal person I've ever known in my life."

Corgan performs 'Tonight, Tonight' to Stern's request, but says he will be no longer playing older material, as he is trying to move forward, and this what he was trying to achieve with Oceania.

You can watch the Howard Stern/Billy Corgan interview here.

I'm Alive, Don't Worry

So, I have been MIA for the past few weeks, with less and less posts over the past few months.  Firstly, I want to apologise for my absence, as I have been writing for two websites consistently, and have joined and left two others.  You'll be delighted to learn that I will be making a few decisions over the next few weeks that will leave me more blogging time!

I have a plan for the blog for the next while on what I want to get done, and most of it I will get done tonight.  Mostly reviews with at least five reviews to do this week.  After reviews are completo (because I actually hate reviews) I will get some feature articles in!  After these reviews are done, I will not be doing any more reviews.  This is because I have the other websites to test this area, and because of my hatred of reviews, I don't want to dread writing for my blog.  This may sound awful, but it will benefit both you and me because you will get proper articles and I won't be sent to an asylum :)

My next plan requires a few months of preparation, and your help!  I plan on creating a music website over the next few months, ideally around January 2013, and I will be taking on writers.  The idea is for you to build up your portfolio, and for me to build mine.  So, if you're interested, email me at info@pollybeans.com and I will keep in touch with you, letting you know how planning is coming along.  The reason my deadline is so far away is because I will be going to college in September with other aspiring journalists, and hope that my move to Dublin will build my contact list (and meet a web designer!)

So that's it!  If you want to know where else to find me, go to Our VinylMRU and One on One Music.

Blog Awards Ireland - Nominate Polly Beans!

Hey everyone, so this post will be irrelevant to everything else on here, but don't leave just yet, I have a favour to ask of all you lovelies.

The Blog Awards Ireland have opened to take in nominations as of June 1st until July 16th. Naturally enough, I nominated myself (which is allowed I'll have you know..) and I thought I may give it a try to get at least a set nomination.  Which is why I need you.

Here is the history of the blog for the sake of it.

Polly Beans was set up around August 2011 by procrastinating student Sarah Keary, but was ignored until January 2012, and hit it's first 1,000 views in February. Since then, it has hit almost 3,000 views within 3 months, that's on average 666 views a month (creepy, but rock on \m/)!  Polly Beans is a music blog generally revolved around Rock Music with some exceptions.  Sarah also writes for Music Review Unsigned, Our Vinyl and is an affiliation to Independent Music Promotions.  March 2012, Sarah wrote an album review for U Magazine.
