Song of the Week: Alice in Chains - 'Rooster Unplugged'

MTV Unplugged appears to have only caught its fame through grunge performances, and with the likes of Nirvana and Alice in Chains creating the most famous Unplugged performances, its highly likely.  'Rooster' was released off Alice in Chains most famous album, Dirt, in 1992.  Alice in Chains played MTV Unplugged in 1996.

Lead singer Layne Staley died in 2002 due to an ongoing battle of drug abuse which lead to the bands hiatus.  The band got back together in 2005, and released their first album without Staley in 2009 and are planning on releasing an album in 2013.  In 2011, Alice in Chains ex-bassist, Mike Starr, was found dead due to a prescribed drug overdose. He had been with the band from its conception to 1993.

This is one of my favourite ever performances and songs of all time, and I can't replace my love for Layne and this Alice in Chains with the new one.  Rest in peace, Layne and Mike.

OurVinyl Launch OurVinyl.TV Kickstarter Campaign

- EDIT - OurVinyl have reached their target over $6,000, but it is a minimum goal, so the more donations, the better the success!

So guys, OurVinyl are in the process of creating their OurVinyl.TV which will be a way of discovering new music through video.  In it there will be live performances and there will be new videos uploaded on a weekly basis.  This is a platform for new, upcoming indie artists to get some exposure.  This is where they need your help.

Sound and recording equipment is becoming more and more available, but always with a hefty price to pay.  They don't accept money from artists, so they foot the costs all by themselves.  OurVinyl are asking for everyone and anyone to donate as much as they possibly can give to help them reach their $6,000 goal: currently, OurVinyl have collected $5,156, with 31 days to go before no more money can be accepted.  This means they are approximately 86% of the way there: only one slight stretch to go!

So guys, I know this is the worst time to ask people for money, but if you have anything, even something you can't get rid out of your PayPal account because its so small, or if you're feeling generous, please donate here!  There is a minimum $1 pledge (€0.85/£0.65) so even if you've got that, it counts!

I work at OurVinyl and it has honestly been the nicest place to work - the team are nice and everything is so professional.  I want the best for the site simply because the team deserve it.

Guns N' Roses: 25 Years Of Metal

Guns N' Roses' 1987 line-up
Celebrating 25 years since its debut, Guns N' Roses released Appetite for Destruction on July 21st, 1987.  Yes, the iconic album is now 25, with their biggest singles, and some of the biggest songs in all of rock, 'Sweet Child O' Mine', 'Welcome to the Jungle', and 'Paradise City'.  Those three tracks have not only defined metal, influenced grunge to kill metal, but have changed and shaped rock 'n' roll forever.

With the original 1987 line up composed of lead singer Axl Rose, lead guitarist Slash, rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler, and has since then changed with Axl Rose being the only original member to still be in the line up.  Appetite for Destruction was Guns N' Roses first and most famous album, proving nothing could replace the four members Axl lost.  On every song, you can recognise Rose's notorious nasal voice, and Slash's crisp and intricate guitar solos.  Back in 1987, the album got a whopping 5 stars from Rolling Stone magazine (and I'll let you on a little secret: us music journalists can't give any album 5 stars, unless its deemed to be album of the decade. Its stupid, I know). On July 21st 2012, the album was played the whole way through on Seattle's KISW radio, which is a unbelievably ironic for Seattle, being the home of Grunge, and Grunge hating everything about Metal.

Appetite for Destruction album cover
The California based band were signed to Geffen Records (DGC) in 1986, exactly 12 months after forming, and 17 months before their debut.  They released five singles off the album; 'It's So Easy' (also the title of Duff McKagan's autobiography), 'Welcome to the Jungle,' ' Sweet Child O' Mine,' 'Paradise City,' and 'Nightrain.'  Although the famous line up are no longer together, Guns N' Roses still continue, but as ex-guitarist Slash confirmed, the original line-up will never reform due to the undesired antics of frontman Axl Rose.

Appetite for Destruction is 'one of those' albums, where music was redefined and classics were made.  It was later replaced by Nirvana's Nevermind, which GnR hated due to a bitter rivalry between Rose and Kurt Cobain.  Take a listen to 'Sweet Child O' Mine' below: I'm certain you know the lyrics - who doesn't?

General Fiasco Release EP For Free Download

Northern Irish natives General Fiasco have released a free studio EP before the release of their follow up to 2010's debut, Buildings.  Unfaithfully Yours will be released on July 30th, and if you're a bit impatient for new tracks, you can download a five-track EP down below. All you have to do is supply your email and the download link will be sent your way!

The band have released two EP's since their debut, and have taken on ex-Panama Kings guitarist, Stuart Bell, creating their current four piece.  The band have put their name on the map within the past 2 years, with their hugely successful debut album, then going on to touring with Snow Patrol and landing gigs in Reading and Leeds Festivals, Glastonbury, T in the Park, Pinkpop and even SXSW in Texas, US.  If you have never heard of General Fiasco but have a thing for Northern Irish accents - prepare to melt.

No Doubt: They're Back!

There is an infectious phenomenon between 90's bands about reforming, produce a new album, tour and disappear again. Every comeback from every band has been anticipated more than the release of a new iPhone. As of July 16th, every 90's kid has come back and revelled in the delights of the most anticipated, demanded comeback of them all: No Doubt.

With a new album ready to be released on September 25th, the eccentric group have finally hit back on the scene since their 2003-2008 hiatus with their latest track 'Settle Down.'  Although we've had the chance of hearing lead singer Gwen Stefani with her solo work (Love. Angel. Music Baby., The Sweet Escape), it also proved that No Doubt could never be replaced or forgotten.  Over their 26 year career, No Doubt have released five albums, including classics such as Rock Steady and achieved mainstream success with 1995's Tragic Kingdom.  They brought us the collision of alternative pop, and a darker, The Cranberries-esque rock, but keeping a Ska funk throughout.  It's difficult for any 90's kid to not feel nostalgic when hearing tracks such as 'Hey Baby,' 'Don't Speak,' and 'Just a Girl,' but it makes us fans wonder - how can they keep their 90's vibe alive in 2012?

Although as it seems Stefani has been mummified since the 90's with absolutely no change in her stunning appearance, the sound the four created together for their next release Push & Shove, seem a little lacking on that loved decade.  Its their typical New Wave sound, but more in tune with 2012 - and maybe that's what they were trying to achieve, but not what the fans were hoping for.  They still have the same look, style and madness as they did all those years ago, but something doesn't click.

'Settle Down' is loved by many fans, so their is no unanimous feedback, with reaching over 2 million hits in 5 days.  The video for the single is 100% cheesy, as it shows the four 'reuniting' and jamming together for what seems like the first time in forever.  For me, I can't keep my eyes off Gwen and her stunning looks as I watch with my jaw hitting the floor - the girl has good genes!  Push & Shove could have better tracks, or No Doubt's time is up.  Lets stay hopeful that the 90's isn't dead or over, quite yet.

Free Download: Two Door Cinema Club Release Single 'Sleep Alone'

Back two years after their debut, gold certified album, Two Door Cinema Club release their first single off new album Beacon.  'Sleep Alone' is available for free download for the next 24 hours, then as of July 21, it will be available to purchase on iTunes, CD and Vinyl.  Beacon will be released on the 3rd/4th of September.  'Sleep Alone' is definitely keeping in touch with the indie-pop sensation that was Tourist History.  If you like, love or hate Two Door Cinema Club, believe me, all those feelings will be kept intact.  Listen to 'Sleep Alone' below.

Song of the Week: Joy Division - 'Disorder'

For a long time, I could never get the fascination over Joy Division until I discovered the album that is Unknown Pleasures - I was quickly converted. The opening track "Disorder" is what made me loved the iconic group - a very true indie, very The Smiths style.  They are also the most amazing meditating music to listen too!  Last Sunday it was Ian Curtis' birthday, so lets celebrate the greatness of the four boys.  Listen to "Disorder" below even if you're not a JD fan - I can promise to convert you.

Jimi Hendrix: The Ultimate Guitar Hero

With every era, generation and decade, their is always that one band or artist that defined music and shaped it into the beauty it was the following decade.  For every decade there was a genre representative of the atmosphere surrounding the lives of those people.  In the 50's you had the rockabilly blues popularised by big names like Elvis Presley; in the 60's you had pop revolution with The Beatles, who were classified as rock at that time. But, in the late 60's, you suddenly had a collision of soul and punk: the likes of Jimi Hendrix crashing with the Sex Pistols.  The 60's and 70's had it all.  It had power in soul, and in political punk - easy going against anarchy. But Jimi Hendrix' message left shock-waves for decades to come; he continues to inspire musicians and regular folk alike.  Jimi Hendrix wasn't the voice of a generation: he was and is the voice of Rock.

Born in 1942, Hendrix experienced all the rockabilly, all the Beatle-mania, yet came alive in the late 60's with his own psychedelic sound. 1967 is when we first tasted what was the Seattle sound of then when we heard Are You Experienced?  under the band name The Jimi Hendrix Experience.  With classics such as "Foxy Lady", "Purple Haze" and "Hey Joe" that never lost their timeless appeal, where they still are recognised as classic and ideal rock songs.  Hendrix was celebrated for his incredible guitar skills, being left-handed whilst playing right-handed guitars on most occasions, and learning his trade without outside help.  He had explored what rock never dared to, and infused funk into what was clouded by the Beatle-Mania.  Hendrix struck a chord with the world again with Axis: As Bold As Love in the same year. Double Hendrix, double the power.

 - Hendrix was a left-handplayer
Although not as popular as his debut, Axis: As Bold As Love still continued on the experimental sound that was present in Are You Experienced.  Hendrix was admittedly disappointed with the album, feeling it could have been better if he was given more time.  He quickly got over his disappointment to create his third masterpiece Electric Ladyland.  A double album released 10 months after Axis, Hendrix explores multiple genre's within the two LP's: from soul, psychedelic, blues and funk.  Hendrix provided a more sensuous sound to the album, later to be noted as one of the earliest sounds in R&B.  His famous finger-work was made even more notorious in the album, with more additions of intricacies and superb sound effects with guitar pedals.  Jimi Hendrix was the leading man in rock, he knew more about the genre, more about music, and more about soul than any other musician before or after his time.

It wasn't long until The Jimi Hendrix Experience broke up and Jimi went solo before ultimately passing away in 1970.  His death is a mystery, but it is known that he asphyxiated, with the argument leaning more towards a mixture of alcohol and unfamiliar sleeping tablets.  A three year career is nothing for a musician today, but for Hendrix it was everything.  He gave us three official albums, and made his mark in music and around the world.  He touched hearts of millions and continues to inspire some of the greatest musicians, and regular people.  Its not often a musician can create an everlasting impression like Jimi Hendrix.  Not only was his music groundbreaking, his guitar techniques and song writing visions were authentic and powerful.  Jimi Hendrix is the ultimate rock hero; the ultimate guitar hero.

Deep Purple's Jon Lord Dies at age 71

Iconic rock group Deep Purple have lost a founding father and their keyboardist of 34 years, Jon Lord died with his battle of pancreatic cancer.  The group have been held high amongst other greats such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath as the pioneers of Heavy Metal, influencing bands such as Alice in Chains and Metallica.  Deep Purple gained huge success with their classic, iconic song, "Smoke on the Water."  Take a listen below, and remember the greatness of not only Deep Purple, but Jon Lord.  Rest in peace.

The xx New Single "Angels" - Listen

The xx are back for round two with their album Coexist which will be released later this year.  There is a definite consistency with "Angels" - no second album jinx here!  Dreaminess, echoes and spine chilling vocals, the song is sparking up the love we always had for The xx.  Listen to the track below!

Jack White Releases "Freedom at 21" Music Video

Higher and better than ever before, Jack White has claimed startling fame with his solo debut Blunderbuss.  We never thought the genius behind The White Stripes, The Dead Weather or The Raconteurs could get any bigger or better: but of course, in true Jack White fashion, he has.  Releasing his third single off his hugely popular album, "Freedom at 21" has a creative video to match his creative way of "launching" the single.  White sent out 1,000 flexidiscs of "Freedom at 21" via helium balloons, where about 3 have been found.  One thing is for sure, Jack White knows how to live up to rock'n'roll expectations, and furthermore, make new expectations for other fellow musicians.  Take a look at the Quentin Tarantino-esque video here!

Song of the Week: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - 'Everybody's On The Run'

What's better than classic rock, mixed with summer feeling and running around half naked on the streets? Yes, that's right, nothing is better than Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds latest song Everybody's On The Run with their new video featuring Mischa Barton, and a lot of leopard print underwear (and Noel of course). Its a nice chill Summer rock song, so hopefully it'll brighten your day amongst the rain, that's if you are in Ireland...

    Riot Grrrl: Courtney Love

Riot Grrrl: a girl who can rock out and doesn't give a shit what anyone else says.
Riot Grrrl: feminism rooted from the punk rock movement.
    Riot Grrrl: Courtney Love.

As our incredibly outrageous, slightly insane Courtney Love turns 48 this week, it leaves you to reminisce on the great feminist movement that was Riot Grrrl.  The woman who is adored by millions and despised by a further few million.  Since the late 80's, Love has been through the good, the bad and the seriously awful times, but still manages to keep true to her rock roots, oblivious to the world that surrounds her.

Hitting fame in the early 90's, Courtney Love dreamed the rockstar dream, and was living it.  Her band, Hole, grasped the limelight with their debut album Pretty on the Inside released in 1991.  Along with Love on the pursuit of fame was band members Eric Erlandson, Jill Emery and Caroline Rue.  This line up changed multiple times over the years, with additions of Kristen Pfaff, Patty Schemel and Melissa Auf der Maur.  Finding love in 1991 with Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain, together they created a notorious, toxic marriage and together had a daughter, Frances Bean, in 1992.

The band went onto release their iconic album to date, Live Through This in 1994, in which there was speculation whether or not Love's husband, Kurt Cobain, wrote the album, in which all band members unanimously disagree.  Popular singles were Doll Parts, Miss World and Violet, becoming more and more relevant as time passes.  The band went on to create their final album as their most favourable album, Celebrity Skin in 1998, where Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins contributed to the writing of the album.

    Hole: Their famous line-up
Love has been attracted by the media for her outrageous actions, words and feuds.  Most notably, she lost custody of her child Frances Bean, now 19, and later accused Nirvana drummer, Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl of abusing her.  She later admits that they were lies, and demands Frances' love back.  Although receiving bad press, Love has an alluring attraction like no other.  She is a true feminist, fighting for women in rock and in society through the Riot Grrrl movement, where punk rock, noise rock and grunge all followed.
To this day, she pushes the boundaries of music and continues her feminist ways, with the release of Hole's latest album, Nobody's Daughter in 2010, alongside a completely different line-up.  She also had a short-lived solo career.

Love was deeply affected by the death of her husband and rock icon, Kurt Cobain.  Again, media continue to speculate his suicide, ruthlessly twisting the story to believe she killed him, although no evidence relates back to her.  Courtney Love will always be iconic for her music, her family mishaps, her 'fuck you' attitude, her feminist ways, and her short blonde locks and red lipstick.  Courtney Love is Riot Grrrl.

Bloc Party Unveil New Single "Octopus"

Set to release their follow up to 2008's Intimacy, Bloc Party release the first single off their latest album Four which is due to be released August 20th.

"Octopus" is a little more indie than the typical Brit-rock the band used to follow.  Not a great fan of the single, hope the album will be a bit more inspiring.

Why I No Longer Write for State.ie

As you all know, I try to write for as many places as possible, and currently write for one Irish wesbite, one English and one American.  I applied to Ireland's own State.ie created by Music Blogger Niall Byrne.  They took me on their team of about eight writers.  I was delighted, naturally enough, to be a part of another website, and was excited to start writing.

When I first emailed, they wanted some reviews to see, even though I had a few reviews done for other websites in which I linked to them.  I sent them on my review of Patti Smith's Banga as it was current, and I was sent back a regurgitated version of it, and told it was far too long.  That was fine, I was going by the word count guidelines of a different website, each website has different word counts.

My first assignment was to review Smashing Pumpkins latest release Oceania, which I was hugely excited to do.  So I did the review as best as I could, feeling a little under pressure after the previous editing of my review, so I wanted it to be perfect.  Notably, I did not enjoy reviewing it at all, I actually felt stressed which has never happened before.  But I sent it in and waited a few days before seeing it online.

I opened up to see "by Sarah Keary" and felt really proud, but when I continued on reading I realised I was cheated.  Most of what I had said was editied; a significant paragraph including my opinion was edited; and the crucial final line was edited.  They took the general basis of what I had said and tried to churn it into State.ie's robot.  The last line is where I said "this is Oceania, and it is genius" where they changed it to "close to genius."  I guess they wanted to be the hard ass critics every musician and I hate.

I confronted them and basically told them to go suck a fat one with their conformist ways.  With that, they proceeded to forward me a message whereby a reader wanted to know where the review had gone, after they removed it from the site.  I emailed the reader notifying him the problem, and how I will link him the original next week.  He replied his excitement to read the review and I forward the message to them.

I don't mind editing, but I don't care for someone ripping off my review.  Both edited and original review of Oceania can be seen under Press Releases.  Luckily for me, I have a loyal and lovely team over at OurVinyl.com, wherein they published my every word on Oceania!

Rip Off Republic?  I think so.  At least you guys know I'm honest!

    The Young Creatives Interview

So recently I was interviewed by The Young Creatives website/weblog where they publicise people within niche's they call 'creatives.'  Before you read, they really emphasise on my guitar playing, when I'm not actually much of a player, so it is fairly irrelevant.  And I am not 'currently' studying Journalism, that's in September.  Just a few little edits, but you get the drift! :)

    My First Ever Album Review

On the 3rd of November 2010, little miss Polly Beans first came to 15 year old Sarah.  I did my first review ever, and it was on Kings of Leon's album Aha Shake Heartbreak.  I did it for school homework, all we had to do was review something and at the time, I had this album plating non-stop.  Here it is, word for word.

The Kings of Leon and their first album Youth and Young Manhood were hyped by everyone.  Some critics labelled them as recyclers, reliving an out of date rock'n'roll dream.  But what the four Southern rockers from Tennessee brought became their own unique sound.

The harsh driving rhythms and gravel vocals were definitely a cut above the rest.  Their second album, Aha Shake Heartbreak became more of a heart-throb than a break.  A quintessential rock album with a southern flare, Kings of Leon exploded onto the music scene with a natural rock'n'roll energy.  Even their hair and clothing scream 70's rock'n'roll!  Their infectious beats and rustic vocals made their music impossible not to love.  Let's take "The Bucket", for example, their most famous track of the album.  Its rock, but even if you're not into rock, trust me, you're into this.  It's catchy, up beat and it promises to deliver a feel good mood.

In contrast to their first album, the four have gone from Southern rock to almost blu grass.  "King of the Rodeo," "Taper Jean Girl" and "Day Old Blues" really enhance Kings of Leon natural beauty.  They're the type of band you can imagine living in a barn, using old broken instruments, yodelling and in actual fact, you wouldn't be far off wrong.  The three brothers of the band were home-schooled and raised by their father, a man with a bible in one hand and a bottle in another.  Sounds like a potential story line for a movie, but this really is Kings of Leon's story.

Aha Shake Heartbreak takes you on an interesting journey.  Musically, it's a fresh sound on the rock scene, their lyrics, as unthoughtful and heartless as they are, they're genius and soulful and secretly tell the story of their own.  Caleb's vocal style is individual as ever.  His rasping chords sound like he's just smoked fifty cigarettes and drank a bottle of whiskey, whether he has or not, he remains in tune and exerts strong emotion whether exhilaration,  tenderness or pain.

Just because rock'n'roll isn't in fashion in today's world, doesn't mean the Kings of Leon are beautifully brilliant.

That is pretty damn brutal right?  Reads more like a bio than any sort of review, but bear in mind, this was my first, and I had never read a review prior.  I suppose I did learn something in school, considering my second review was in U Magazine.  Teacher's notes? "Excellent - engaging and informative. A2." (A2 is the Irish grading system, meaning 85-89%)

... What a load of bollocks.  Did my teacher even read that, or does he have really low standards?  At least I don't write like that any more.

Physical or Digital? The Future of Music

The options of publishing of music onto different mediums has evolved over the years due to enhanced technology, development in science and general trends and fads.  It wasn't long ago we were listening to our CD's on walkmans before Steve Jobs came and introduced iTunes.  Today we can download every single song we could possibly imagine, as it is less expensive to release music on an internet cloud, that publish it on CD and release it to stores and companies.  With unsigned artists predominantly using online resources to release their material, and larger, signed artists sticking to the old reliable's, is digital taking over the music world?

Jack White in his Third Man Records' store
Ex-White Stripes frontman Jack White has his own record label, Third Man Records, in which has a vinyl record only record store.  Over the past few years it is significantly clear on the current increase of desire in vinyl records because of it's retro look, and nostalgic feel.  Vinyl records is one of the oldest form of recording and publishing, dating back to the 1800's.  Almost all albums released today can be purchased on vinyl also, averaging out at €20 for a 12" LP, and €7 for a 7" single.  Costs varies for older vinyl's dating back from pre-80's, with originals usually being rare, and unused ones costing well over €100, if, per se, one of those records was a Jimi Hendrix original.  In digital world where MP3, MPEG4 and FLAC exist, value isn't a factor, with equality in every album downloaded.  No competition, no hierarchy.  Prices are also much lower, with the option of illegal downloading from online torrents.  But what makes you feel more proud?  Having Jimi playing on your iTunes, or how he expected you to listen to it, on vinyl?

The Compact Disc, or CD, was eventually introduced in the early 1980's, which noted the decline of vinyl records in the mainstream market.  Every musician/band's work can be found on a CD, whether or not they died before it's existence.  This made the CD more universal for listeners, with each consumer buying a walkman or CD player.  It's simple and basic, with every home having a stereo player, and every car with a CD player.  Over the last decade, the Compact Disc's popularity declined in the mainstream, as the focus emphasised on a new fad: digital.

Vinyl Records: A huge hit in recent years
The man behind the Apple logo, Steve Jobs, created iTunes along with his collection of iPods.  It gave you the option of putting all of your CD's on your computer and placing them all into the one place.  Practical and convenient, but invisible music never declared popularity amongst musicians, especially the more successful such as Jack White himself, and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.  You can't go too far without knowing someone who has an iPod, an MP3 player, or music on their mobile phone.  Portable invisible music is widely popular, with many teenagers of the digital generation laughing at CD's and it's outdated look.

But with every new change we have rebellion.  And with many people not following the trend of MP3, MPEG4 etc., bring back the golden oldie: vinyl.   Record Store Day is huge across the globe, taking place on certain dates in certain areas each year, and is always a massive success for each record store.  Admittedly, I myself love vinyl.  I love it's feel, the crackle it makes when playing, and seeing the all important album work blown up.  Although maybe just a new fetish, it's hard to imagine how the medium of music could develop on past being invisible.  As a huge music lover, I take pride in certain bands or albums that I listen to, so I always feel the need to have them on some form of physical format.

Is this the future of music?  Being invisible?  It's a little sad, and I'm not even a musician!  I can only imagine what the current greats are thinking of our generation, their fans, who don't even know what analog recording is.  What do you think?  Are you a vinyl or CD lover, or binge on your MP3's?

John Frusciante to Release EP and LP in 2012

Ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist, John Frusciante is back with his solo career and releases the follow up to 2009's The Empyrean.  Letur-Lefr is due to be released in Japan on July 4th, in North America on July 17th, and in the rest of the world on July 16th.  All tracks on the EP were written in 2010, featuring contributions from artists such as Nicole Turley, who is Frusciante's wife, RZA and Rugged Monk.  Frusciante describes the EP as "Progressive Synth Pop, which says nothing about what it sounds like, but does describe my basic approach," and notes that "the records [Letur-Lefr & PBX..] are very different from each other."

PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone LP is set to be released in Japan on September 12th, in North America on September 25th and in the rest of the world on September 24th.  The album was written in 2011.  Frusciante not only has ability to produce creative music, but creative album titles and album covers.  Over his 18 year solo career, we got to experience the artistic element of Frusciante aside from the voice and the guitar.

Letur-Lefr and PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone will both be available on CD, vinyl, digital format and cassette.  Pre-order links for PBX will be available in August.

Book Review: Entertain Us: The Rise of Nirvana

    Current title and cover
20 years after their fame and glory, author Gillian Gaar explores that fame Nirvana breeched in her latest release Entertain Us: The Rise of Nirvana.  An in depth view from the woman who lived through the 90's grunge era, and loved every minute of it.  Seattle-based Gaar has released several books over the years, with a few of which being inspired by the band that was Nirvana.  She has extensive knowledge in rock'n'roll, haven written for Rolling Stone, Q and The Rocket.  This gives us all reason to believe she knows what she's talking about.

Entertain Us: The Rise of Nirvana withheld a previous title with Entertain Us: Nirvana, Bleach and the Rise of the Seattle Scene.  Below is the original idea, with a black & white cover.  Gaar indulges into Nirvana before they were even Nirvana, with stories around the one-time band Fecal Matter that Kurt Cobain and Dale Crover created together, and their demo managed to suave their desired bassist, Krist Novoselic.  She introduces the inspirations of the band, the culture of the Seattle scene and how it created that all important grunge sound.  She explores the growth of the members as a family, be it at times broken, and the invitation of Dave Grohl to complete their final line-up.

    Original book title and cover
The story continues with their fame, the love of grunge music globally and how Nirvana inspired other Seattle based acts to explore that sound.  She also transverses into the destruction of the band and the complete death of the iconic group.  Gaar includes quotes from interviews she had taken out with Nirvana and grunge associates such as Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, Kurt Danielson, Mark Arm and Butch Vig.  In the opening, she provides a collection of beautiful and rare photos of Nirvana, with a focus on Kurt, and an in depth explanation of the creation of their biggest hit, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' which is a very nice touch.

I am on of the biggest Nirvana fans you could meet, but I never can understand the need to have multiple books on the exact same story.  I have read books on Nirvana, Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl, and they all tell me the story I already know.  But Gaar throws that stereotype out the window, and although it is another passage back in time like the other books, she proves she isn't another Nirvana author, making money out of a dead man's legacy: Gillian Gaar releases a book no Nirvana fan can predict.  Her writing skills and personal touch, and genuine love for Nirvana and grunge music blossom through her words, making this book an excellent, intense read.

Entertain Us: The Rise of Nirvana will be available to buy in August.
